about

This was my first "abstract" album where I decided to defy the convention of "rap" and explore my imagination as an emcee. I also sung more on this album than I ever did before, which speaks to the rhyme flows and choruses. I was channeling my middle school years as a deep fan of "new wave" and skatepunk.

The title "Da Helpless Won" was a tribute to the Tao Beh Ching, as Chinese royalty were called "The Helpless One" as a testimony to the Tao and the power of leadership being rooted in the people, rather than just the leaders.

I also used the name "Piankhi 7" which was an alias I used in Atlanta in 1995 when I won the Zulu Nation Battle Rap Tournament in Little Five Points, and the Roots Poetry Slam at Spelman University.

This album made folks rap different in the underground and there was no other album before it that went this far outside of the pocket rhythmically, lyrically and melodically. This album stepped toward the unknown realm of futuristic battle rap, while offering new age content in a period that was known for drug dealer rap and the early stages of the "Southern" rap craze.

This is an early magnum opus of my career.
